Written and directed by Richard Curtis and produced by Duncan Kenworthy (the team behind Notting Hill and Four Weddings And A Funeral) this zingy Brit-com weaves a vivid crazy quilt of interlocking or unrelated vignettes all dealing with the subject of love over the Christmas holidays in London. At first, figuring out who's who is somewhat of a daunting task since there are ten storylines going on at once, and you need to separate one from the other to make sense of it all.

The ensemble cast also includes Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Keira Knightly, Martin Freeman, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Andrew Lincoln. That he pulls it off so entertainingly is undeniably impressive; that he does it so shamelessly suggests that his writing fares better with other, less ingratiating directors. There is a great scene in the film which you have probably already seen in an internet meme and that's Hugh Grant (who plays the British Prime Minister in the film) dancing to 'Jump (For My Love)' by the Pointer Sisters. I've seen a lot of the classic and modern Christmas films and there aren't many which measure up to the quality of Love Actually. As the years have gone by some of the scenes in the film have stayed with me and have become more and more powerful. The happy go lucky chap who is happy with any kind of love but the closing scences as the credits role make me cry the most. Additionally, a pair of porn film stand-ins bond on the set, an artist fantasises about his friend's wife; and perhaps funniest of all, an aging rock star (Bill Nighy) tries for his comeback with a Christmas novelty song.

If you can't find a moment in the film where your heart strings are well and truly plucked, then you're probably dead! But plenty of the characters and situations were enjoyable enough for me to become interested in finding out just how all the relationships would work out in the end. Surprisingly, I would've liked to have seen more of each couple just to get to know them all more so the respective endings had a little more meaning. When I first saw this film at the cinema, my initial thoughts were the film was ok but not brillant. This film has had a regular slot on tv and everytime it is on, I always found myself sitting down to watch it.This allows the narrative to focus on his becoming accepted by the group, and then his struggle to break free, which settles into a solid three-act story.
